Woman Power Rises on Kosdaq
||2006-01-13 21:32:00 / 1175
Women’s power is beginning to take off in the junior stock market.
According to the Kosdaq-Listed Companies Association, 11 out of 918 companies listed on Kosdaq are run by women CEOs and their number is expected to grow fast.
``It is still a small portion, considering the recent surge of woman leaders in other sectors. However, the number of female CEOs on the Kosdaq market is expected to increase at a fast rate on the back of successful pioneering groups,’’ an official of the association said.
Chung bok-yim, 50, president of Kenertec, an energy-saving combustion system provider, is one of the female CEOs on the Kosdaq.
The founder of the company also became the richest female shareholder on the Kosdaq last year, riding on the on-going surge in stock prices.
Chung holds 25.49 percent, or 2.8 million shares, in the company which was registered in May 2003.
As of now, the stock value of her shareholdings is about 26 billion won.
The nurse-turned businesswoman set up Kenertec in 1997 after acquiring Kosin Engineering. She has expanded the size of the company 300 times over the past decade.
Yang Yoon-sun, 41, president of Medipost, a blue chip biotechnology company, is another case of the growing power of women.
The share of the biomedical company that specializes in stem cell therapies was spotlighted when it was listed on the stock market last July as the company is a partner firm of Mizmedi Hospital, one of the research partners of embattled scientist Hwang Woo-suk.
The company’s stock has been suffering because of the stem cell controversy. Yang is trying to minimize the fallout resulting from its links with Hwang, stressing its research is on umbilical cord blood, not stem cells.
``The number of female professionals using their expertise and experience to lead companies has been growing,’’ the association official said.
Park Sung-kyong, president of Deco, a female apparel brand, was a fashion designer.
The association also found most of companies led by women performed well on the Kosdaq market last year.
Shares of Softland and Hoshin Textile, both of which are led by women, rose 729 percent and 549.25 percent, respectively, last year.
