South Korea will host the world football championship of players under 17 in 2007.

In FIFA's executive meeting held in Zurich, Switzerland on March 8, 2005, South Korea won a unanimous vote over Iran to host the ninth biennial U-17 World Championship, the KFA said.

A total of 52 matches will be held in six to eight cities throughout the country over a span of 22 to 24 days. Venues and detailed schedules will be decided by the Korea Football Association in cooperation with FIFA.

KFA said the number of participants will increase to 24 in 2007 from the current 16. This, along with the U-20 Cup, will make the event the second-largest FIFA event in terms of the number of the participants after the World Cup finals in which 32 nations take part.

Including South Korea and Iran, 14 nations bid for the event in February 2005. But the two countries remained as the final candidates as FIFA decided to hold the event in Asia.

It is the first time for South Korea to hold the event, and the third time to host a major FIFA international event. The country co-hosted the 2001 Confederations Cup and the 2002 World Cup with Japan.

KFA president Chung Mong-joon said, "I am very please at the result, and want to express my deep appreciation to the people, the government and media who helped us.

"FIFA highly evaluated our infrastructure and successful management during the 2002 World Cup Finals. And I hope this will be a good chance to promote South Korean football to the world, and help our young players get more support."

The hosting of the event was also a campaign pledge by Chung during the KFA's election in January. Chung is also a vice president of FIFA. "As the host, we will try to achieve a result that can rival our semifinal ending of the World Cup."
